How Long Do Car Batteries Last?

Car Battery

Everyone knows what to do with a dead car battery: change it out for a new one. But it’s best to replace a battery before that happens to avoid getting stranded. How long do car batteries last? The average vehicle battery life can range from three to five years, but that can depend on a number of factors. Ourservice center team wants to help you keep your car running in top shape on our Easton city roads. So, we’ve put together the guide on battery life below.

How Long Do Car Batteries Last, Usually?

Replacing a battery is one of those expenses every driver has to expect. So, how long do car batteries last? As we said, the average vehicle battery life can go up to five years. But that can vary depending on driving conditions and weather. A battery will wear out faster when the car has to be started several times a day for short trips as opposed to just a few times for longer trips. Harsh weather conditions like we sometimes have during our Stoughton winters, are likewise rough on a battery.

Signs It’s Time for a Car Battery Change

If your battery hasn’t yet been around for the duration of the average vehicle battery life, it may still show indications that it needs to be replaced. Here are some of those signs:

How to Know If It’s Time for a Car Battery Change

  • Your car takes a long time to start
  • There are bulges in the battery
  • The check engine light is flashing (there could be other reasons for this)
  • The battery has leaks

Your Battery May Not Be the Problem

If your car is having trouble starting, the problem may not be your battery. That’s especially true if it’s not reached the average vehicle battery life. The best way to find out the cause of the issue is toschedule an appointment at our service center. But, if you’d rather do it yourself, here’s how to test a car battery:

How to Test a Car Battery

  • Connect a multimeter to the positive and negative terminals while the engine is not running. You want to see voltage around 12.6 volts.
  • Start the car and check the multimeter.
  • Ideally, the voltage should be around 10. If it drops below 5 volts, replace your battery.
