At Silko Volkswagen, one question we often encounter from Hanover drivers is, “What do tire numbers mean?” It’s not just a random set of numbers and letters; they provide crucial data about your tire. By understanding the tire number meaning, you can ensure your vehicle is safe, efficient, and suited to your Braintree driving needs.

What Do the Numbers on Tires Mean?

Most Norwood drivers have glanced at the sidewall of a tire and noticed a series of characters, such as “P215/65R15 95H.” But what do these characters represent? Let’s use that code as an example:

  • Type of Vehicle: The first letter (P) denotes the type of vehicle. “P” stands for passenger vehicle, while “LT” is for light trucks, and so on.
  • Tire Width: The following three digits (215) are the tire’s width in millimeters. This is the distance from one sidewall to the other.
  • Aspect Ratio: After the slash, the next two numbers (65) represent the aspect ratio. It’s a percentage showing the tire’s height compared to its width.
  • Construction: The letter that comes next (R) indicates the tire’s construction. “R” means it’s a radial tire.
  • Wheel Diameter: The two-digit number (15) after the construction type indicates the size of the wheel the tire fits, measured in inches.
  • Load Index & Speed Rating: The final two characters (95H) give information about the tire’s load capacity and its speed rating, respectively.

How to Check Tire Pressure

No matter the code, it’s important to make sure that your tires’ are properly inflated. Most newer vehicles have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that will notify the driver when the tires are under- or over-inflated. Drivers can also always bring their Volkswagen vehicles to Silko Volkswagen for quality service, including tire pressure checks and tire services!
